Extraction Vancouver

  • Why Would I Need A Tooth Extraction?

Aside from wisdom teeth, a person might need their other teeth removed throughout their adulthood. This could be due to severe infection or tooth decay, as well as space requirements when one’s getting braces.

  • What Is A Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a quick procedure in which you might be given local or general anesthetics, or a combination of both. It’s performed by a general dentist or a dental surgeon and could be done on teeth that are visible on the surface, or teeth that are broken, below the surface, and impacted.

  • How Much Do Tooth Extractions Cost?

How much the procedure costs can depend on the complexity of your surgery, the location of your tooth, and where you live as well. Here at Scotia Tower Dental Group in Vancouver, we are happy to announce that we accept all kinds of dental insurances so you can get your teeth taken care of at ease.

  • What To Do Beforehand?

Before getting a tooth extraction, your dentist will get X-rays of your tooth. You should inform them of any medication, vitamin supplements, or over-the-counter medications you take, as well as any pre-existing health conditions that you might have, as your dentist may ask you to make sure those conditions are fully treated before you undergo the procedure.

Do not smoke before the surgery. Tell your dentist if you have felt nausea or vomitted the night before the procedure, it might affect the type of anesthesia you’re receiving, or your dentist might reschedule. You should also make sure to have someone to drive you home with you if you’re getting general or IV anesthesia.

  • What’s The Extraction Like?

The anesthetics you receive will numb you enough so that the only thing you’ll feel during the procedure is mild pressure, so there shouldn’t be any pain involved. Your dentist might take different approaches, depending on what kind of tooth extraction you need. Once they’re done, you’re ready to go!

  • The Aftercare

The healing process will not take more than a few days once you get your tooth (teeth) removed. There are a few things you should do to make sure that your recovery goes smoothly.

  • Put an ice pack on your cheek directly where you had the extraction. Keep the ice pack there for 10 minutes before lifting it. Then, repeat the process.
  • Keep the gauze pad your dentist placed in your mouth for 3-4 hours or until it’s soaked in blood. Bite down on the pad hard to decrease bleeding.
  • Take any OTC painkillers your dentist prescribed you with.
  • Brush and floss like you would normally. Be careful to avoid the extraction site however.
  • Rest for 24 hours after the surgery. Do not get back to your life routine too quickly!
  • Don’t use a straw for a day after you get the surgery.
  • Dont smoke.
  • Don’t rinse for 24 hours after the extraction. After a day, add a half teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of water to rinse out your mouth with.
  • You can only eat soft food like yogurt, pudding, and applesauce the day after the procedure. Gradually introduce new foods to your diet as you’re healing.

Remember that if you are experiencing pain that does not go away after a few days, or symptoms of infection, such as fever and pain, contact your dentist immediately.
