Sealants Vancouver

Sealants are a thin layer of coating that your dentist paints on the chewing surface of your teeth to avoid tooth decay. Sealants are usually applied to the back teeth, (the premolars and molars,) as they are more vulnerable to decay. The liquid sealant quickly bonds with your tooth, forming a protective shield over your tooth enamel.

  • Why Should I Get My Teeth Sealed?

Getting sealants is important because although thorough brushing and flossing can clean the teeth completely and get rid of plaque, this is not always the case. As we have less access to the back teeth and their grooves and depressions, we are more likely to leave parts of them unclean. This is why sealants can help us. They make sure that infection and decay stay far away from your back teeth.

  • The Application Process

Applying the sealants is a simple and quick procedure. Each tooth only takes a few minutes for your dental hygienist or dentist to apply the sealant to. The application process goes as described below.

  • First, the teeth that you want to seal are cleaned.
  • Then, each tooth is dried and cotton or other absorbent material is put around it to keep it dry.
  • Sometimes, your dental provider may apply an etching solution to the chewing surface of the tooth to roughen it up. This roughness helps the sealant bond with the tooth surface more easily and quickly.
  • Once that is done, the teeth are rinsed and dried again.
  • Finally, the sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel. Sometimes a special light is used to help the sealant bond with the teeth. Other times, they will bond on their own.
  • How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can last up to 10 years. Regular dentist check-ups are required after getting your teeth sealed as the sealant might chip or wear down, which will allow decay to travel through.
